Enviroquip’s MBR Coupled with the SymBio® Process for Ultimate Nutrient Removal

Enviroquip is pleased to offer its latest membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology utilizing flat-plate microfiltration membranes manufactured by Kubota, Japan. Since 1989, more than a thousand wastewater treatment plants worldwide have successfully utilized this cost-effective and reliable technology to consistently produce water that exceeds most reuse quality standard.

Designed specifically for wastewater applications, the flat-plate configuration allows gravity operation, which reduces operating cost and simplifies system control. With improved design and process innovations, space and power requirements have been significantly reduced. For applications within United States, Enviroquip has coupled its proprietary SymBio® technology for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification with the MBR technology. This combination is proposed for plants designed to meet stringent nutrient removal requirements such as 8.0 ppm TN and less than 0.1 ppm TP. Low total nitrogen levels are achieved by using simultaneous nitrification and denitrification concept in conjunction with the conventional recycle concept to a pre-anoxic basin from the MBR. Supplemental carbon can be added to the pre-anoxic or to the SymBio basin for complete denitrification. P removal is achieved by chemical precipitation in the MBR.

The SymBio® process monitors the NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) levels in the biomass along with dissolved oxygen levels in the water to indicate the changing biological oxygen demand very precisely. Based on the results, the aeration is controlled to maintain low dissolved oxygen (< 1.0 ppm) for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in the same basin. This award winning technology has been utilized successfully all over the world by the wastewater treatment industry.

The SymBio MBR combination offers the following advantages to the treatment operators:

  • TN < 8.0 ppm and TP < 0.1 ppm
  • Small footprint (Total plant HRT <= 8.0 hours)
  • Low DO operation in the SymBio basin plus low internal recycle saves energy
  • Real-time biological activity information from NADH sensor with minimal maintenance
